Economic Vision: Creating a Tax Policy that Works for All of Us

How we tax our citizens reflects our values as a society. We need to make our economy work for us again by making life easier for those who are struggling, not creating more tax breaks for those who don’t really need them.

Instead of investing in people, we have created a system of winners and losers, and right now too many of us are on the losing side. Everything is more expensive these days – groceries, services, insurance, entertainment – everything. Slashing Medicaid and other vital services to pay for tax cuts for large corporations and our wealthiest neighbors might make some big political donors happy. However, it will never bring these prices down for the rest of us.

Most of the teachers Simon works with are struggling, even though they did everything right. They worked hard, went to college, raised families, taught our children, and now they just can’t seem to get ahead. Basic middle-class values seem out of reach. Instead, these hard-working teachers are having trouble buying homes and sending their own kids to college. And it’s not just teachers; it’s farmers, and nurses, and builders and small business owners. Maybe it’s your neighbor. Maybe it’s you.

By focusing on getting relief to the people who really need it, we can create an economy that works for all of us. This means more power into the hands of consumers that will then be able to afford more of the goods and services provided by main street. In the long run this is better for everyone, with far more winners, and far fewer losers. Besides, it was never meant to be a competition in the first place.
